Collaboration with Visual Artist Dana Carter
Summer 2010: Jason Ajemian and Dana Carter met on a dirt road in the Appalachian foothills of Southeastern Ohio. Sharing a common admiration for the cosmos, word-play, eyelid movies, time travel and telepathy, they set out on a journey away from knowledge toward stormy horizons.
The artists began building BRAINSTORMS through digital communications under the auspices of El Nino. The mid-western winter that year included episodes of thunder-snow and whale slides but their signal held strong. Shared traits in the individual practices include: temporality of existence, frequencies of 7’s and 12's (for the sake of harmony, like pushing an alligator over the edge with a Bb drone) poetics of distance, astrological big hearts, camouflage transparencies and dirty bags for function. By way of translation, writing, incantation and drawing, both artists arrive at immersive emotional environments. The ecosystem of the two practices blurs the boundary between disciplines to reveal that the atmosphere is a faulty lens.
BRAINSTORMS pairs Carter's cosmic sunlight animations with Ajemian's musical blueprints for breath process orchestration. At the intersection of breath and sunshifts, elements culled from the artist's past process, each work is built though a direct interaction with the slowness of the natural world. Now in storms, bing the the digital hyper-speed interference into a hypnotic world of silent film accompanied by live organs. These works inhale dreams of the future and exhale the shadowy past.
